My Other Favorite Sheriff

It's rare you meet a down to earth guy who started out as a patrol officer in a big city....just like you.
He worked the streets, made the arrests, did the paperwork, went to court...just like you.  He did all the same things you did. Now, he's the Sheriff of one of the largest counties in the state, having earned a sterling reputation of honesty and integrity.
Even when he was Chief of what was then, a fledgling department, he ran calls and was at your back when you least expected it. A highly intelligent man, known for speaking his mind and looking out for the line officers. If you deserved it, you would get an ass chewing and he'd tell you why you deserved it. If you did something great, he'd tell you that too. He did it face to face, without threats or intimidation. He remembered every officer's first name. It was a well known fact that he despised terminating people.

It's also rare that the Sheriff of a large county finds himself in a police chase. Little did this reckless driver realize that he almost killed the Sheriff. The Sheriff then went in pursuit of the suspect. Speeds reached 120 mph and the Sheriff's SUV puttered at a mere 95 mph. Attempts to stop this clown with stop sticks proved futile and he continued on his rampage of running people off the road and acting with a total disregard for human life and property.

The Sheriff was finally able to corner the suspect at the end of a dirt road. Surprisingly, the Sheriff popped off 9 rounds at the vehicle tires, trying not to injure or kill the guy. It worked. The vehicle was disabled and the suspect apprehended.

I never would have believed it either. Then again, Sheriff Cannon is also known for his determination.

I could just ramble on about how even cops make dumb ass mistakes, but I won't.
We've all been in a position where we're running late for work and we speed. It's just that most people don't have the luxury of a Crown Vic police interceptor engine that we can utilize to put some distance behind us. If you find that people aren't moving out of your way any faster, you turn on those pretty blue lights and generally speaking, they move over. However, we don't really want to draw too much attention to the fact that we're travelling over 100 mph. We might draw the attention of another officer. You know.... like the state police.

It's one thing if your blues were on and you were in need of assistance chasing down a bad guy, but when you become the bad guy, reckless and moronic driver, the mutual respect thing might just go out the window.  Attempting to catch up and get close enough to identify what department the reckless driver is from also puts the pursuing officer's life in jeopardy. The 2 things that will go through my mind are; is the police car stolen or is the police officer that's driving in distress?

This 5 minute video is from the dashcam of a Florida State Trooper who went in pursuit of a City of Miami police car because that car was weaving through interstate traffic at speeds as high as 120 mph.  It's not until about 1:20 minutes in to the video that you can actually see the car the trooper is pursuing.

The P.O.P. Factor was pretty high on this one and that trooper didn't have much of a choice but to lock his ass up. Did you notice he put up no resistance or give much of an argument? The video doesn't lie.

Hot Pursuit

I-95 from New York to Miami, FL is always loaded with drug runners, car thieves and assorted other felonious riff-raff.  Law enforcement can't stop them all, but sometimes they get lucky, often putting themselves in severe danger.

About 7 p.m. last night, a Dorchester County Sheriff's Deputy attempts a traffic stop on I-95 southbound in Nowheresville, SC.

The vehicle in question, a black Acura, initially slows down upon being lit up by the cruiser, but must have decided hauling ass was better.  The chase was on.  Pursuit speed ran as high at 100 m.p.h. and the jack offs must have stupidly thought shooting at cops would aid in their getaway.  Well, we know that only serves to piss off the police even more.
The occupants open the sun roof of the Acura and start firing at pursuing police cars, actually striking a cruiser 2 times.  What generally happens during a police pursuit when the occupants are shooting at police, is that there will be a copious amount of pretty little blue lights on your ass until you go down.  That's just what happened.  Different jurisdictions will come out of the woodwork to assist in any way they can.  You just don't shoot at the po-po and expect to get away with it.

One Deputy "PITs" the Acura, forcing it to go off the road, rolling over.  Unbelievably, the occupants aren't so injured that they can't come out of an over-turned vehicle shooting and running.  They didn't get very far.  The stretch of road where they crashed is a bit desolate and heavily wooded.  K-9 officers made short order of locating our 2 perps.  Charges of Attempted Murder, Failing to Stop for Police and Possession of a Stolen Motor Vehicle should keep their worthless asses in jail for awhile.

The most amazing part --  not one single shot was fired by police.  One Deputy suffered minor injuries after the car wreck and we wish him a speedy recovery.  As for the scumbags.....well, do we care?
